MPEA General Meeting
September 1, 2017
Attendance: member list passed around to initial (and check home email addresses)
President’s Report, Danielle Mastrogiovanni (unable to attend) Laurie Schorno reported on Danielle’s behalf:
- Welcome back to school! And welcome to our new members!
- Thank you, HSA, for the breakfast!
- Tuesday’s PD - MPEA will provide pizza (please bring your own drinks) for each school; delivered at 12:00; tallied the amount of pizza needed - Wayne, Social Coordinator, will order
- Chairs/co-chairs of committees were introduced and individually thanked
- Friendly reminder - NJEA is a powerful influence on all other unions; many, many others look to NJEA to see what they should be like
- Please keep an eye on your prescription costs; there have been some issues with the new plan - AmeriHealth; please email Amy Barkman to let her know and cc Danielle; we need the documentation if we ever were to start a class action grievance
- Back to School Nights already quickly approaching (Mt. Way’s Thurs., Sept. 14th; Borough’s Thurs. Sept. 28th); we will have an MPEA table (Danielle has goodies to put out) to show our pride in public education; Felicia, Amy, and Laurie volunteered to head the table for Mt. Way’s and Gary and Sara volunteered to do Borough’s - thank you, volunteers!; thinking to have the table for the first hour of the night
- Scheduled General Meeting dates for 2017-2018 (Thursdays):
- Sept. 1, Oct. 12, Feb. 15, May 17, End of Year Celebration TBD
- “First come first serve” is set for reimbursement; class approval does NOT count towards first come first serve
- They can approve the class, but it’s when your paperwork i.e. grade is submitted for reimbursement is when “first come first serve” applies - these papers are time stamped
- We can be reimbursed up to 9 credits per year
- Last year $18,000 was reimbursed; our cap with new contract is $22,000
- Treasurer, Darlene Koeck:
- Treasurer’s Report in MPEA Google folder and shared through email
- MPEA will provide lunch for Tuesday’s PD
- Social, Wayne Looney:
- Pizza will be delivered to each school for Tuesday, Sept. 5th PD Day at 12:00 p.m.
- Happy Hours will be scheduled once a month; reminders will be sent out
- We’ll have our annual Thanksgiving and Winter/Christmas ½ day lunches scheduled again
- Correspondence, Karen Penkoski:
- If you know someone in an accident, surgery, etc. please let Karen know
- PRIDE, Laurie Schorno:
- $150,000 has been granted to our school district!
- PRIDE will be funding our social at the end-of-the-year (like last year), as well as funding HSA bowling fundraiser

- Ginny Hussey will unfortunately be on leave, so in need of someone for the Veterans program - maybe student council?; 3rd grade will do breakfast again; 8th graders do an essay contest
- Legislative, Laurie Schorno:

- We need to support Phil Murphy; he wants to appeal Chapter 78 - the healthcare contribution percentages; or at the least wants to get the percentages rolled back and to a flat rate; focused on getting pension fully funded
- Webmaster, Siobhan Cassidy:
- If doing a PRIDE grant, send pictures and a blurb, or announcements to get posted
- Contract is on the website
- Shoppers, Monica Crudele & Jane Hurley-Mead:
- Please let them know if you hear of baby, wedding, etc. news
- Read Across America, Jess Hendershot:
- Jess volunteered to organize Mt. Way’s activities - thank you, Jess!
- Volunteer needed from Borough

- Mary Ellen volunteered to do the 8th grade awards - thank you, Mary Ellen!
